Few big cities have been given such an opportunity: the city centre of Hamburg is at the moment going through expansion. In Paris, for example, there are conflicts over every square metre of expansion; in London, new developments like in the case of the 2012 Olympics are possible only far from the centre; Hamburg, however, is expanding its very city core: 13 separate districts will be created on the Elbe, with 5,500 apartments and 40,000 jobs. They will include a new 10-kilometre quay promenade, the Philharmonic building, a new university, a museum and an underground line.
